Acer has announced the latest addition to its super slim Aspire ultrabook lineup this morning. Called the Aspire S5, the notebook features Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge processors, 256GB of solid-state storage, and promises to be the “world’s thinnest ultrabook.”
The Aspire S5, which got its first unveiling back in January at CES, will launch later this month with a price tag starting at $1,399. That’s $200 more than Apple’s base model 13-inch MacBook Air — the notebook which inspired this new generation of Windows-powered ultrabooks — but it does have a little more going on under the hood.
In addition to its Core i7 processor, the Aspire S5 will ship with a 256GB flash drive, and USB 3.0, HDMI, and Thunderbolt ports — which are concealed behind a motorized, drop-down door that Acer calls the MagicFlip I/O. All of that is packed into a svelte shell that measures just 11.2mm at its thinnest point, and 15mm at its thickest point. It weighs just 2.65 pounds.
The Aspire S5 will also bring AcerCloud — a free backup solution for images, media, and documents — to the United States. The service will offer companion applications for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, which will allow users to access their AcerCloud data on the go using only their smartphone.
In addition to the new Aspire S5, Acer has also refreshed its Aspire S3 line, introducing Sandy Bridge Core i7 processors and the same 256GB of flash storage. It will also be available in a new color — champagne — with prices ranging from just $648 to $999.
