The Verge reports that Andy Lees of Microsoft was part of a top secret partnership and development at the company and on April 30, Microsoft had announced a strategic partnership with Barnes and Noble, which means that a Microsoft Reader is high on the charts. They further go on to say that, “Lees' involvement in the secret KIN hardware makes him a prime candidate for a fresh skunkworks project at Microsoft, and the links to the Barnes & Noble deal referencing Windows Phone cannot be ignored. A number of Windows Phone enthusiast sites discovered visits from devices with unusual resolutions running Windows Phone 8 back in April. While this doesn't confirm Windows Phone's involvement in a potential Microsoft Reader tablet, it does suggest the company is preparing to support different form factors with its mobile operating system. The timing of Microsoft's event on Monday is also significant, scheduled just two days before a Windows Phone 8 summit."
On Friday Microsoft sent out extremely vague invitations for an event in Los Angeles that will commence at around 3:30 PST on Monday. Even the location of the event is being kept secret until 10 AM PST that day to the people who will be attending. Some speculation had been running to the idea that Microsoft would be unveiling a tablet, but it now appears the answer is slightly more complex than that.
We had earler carried an interesting story about Microsoft investing $605 million in Barnes and Noble and that piece of news may have an interesting role to play in today's announcement.
For those not in the know, here’s a quick recap. Microsoft has been sending invites to a super secret event this Monday, June 18 at 3:30pm in Los Angeles, where the company has planned for a ‘major’ announcement. No other details about the nature of the event had been disclosed. Microsoft has chosen to keep quiet on this particular topic and they haven’t responded to any replies or requests for comments. However, if this piece of information is indeed true, then we could have a new Microsoft Barnes and Noble tablet.
