Samsung’s ChatON messaging service has finally touched down on the Windows Phone platform today, ten months after making its debut on Android and bada. The service is now available on every major mobile operating system there is.
Announced by Samsung back in August, ChatON is the Korean company’s answer to services like Research in Motion’s BlackBerry Messenger, Apple’s iMessage, and third-party solutions like WhatsApp. The advantage it has over the first two, of course, is that it isn’t restricted to just one operating system.
In addition to basic instant messaging, ChatON allows users to send and receive images, video clips, audio messages, and more. It also offers features like group chat and “broadcasts,” and it now supports Android, bada, BlackBerry, iOS, and Windows Phone devices.
With several popular messaging services already available to smartphone owners, you could argue that Samsung is wasting its time with ChatON. However, the service comes pre-installed on all of Samsung’s Android, bada, and now Windows Phone handsets, and the company’s huge market share means ChatON has the potential to become a very popular service.
You can now download ChatON for free from the Windows Phone Marketplace.
