iOS 6 to Support Wireless Emergency Alerts

There has been a lot of discussion about the new features in Apple’s recently announced iOS 6, but one major feature has gone overlooked. Known as ”Government Alerts,” devices running iOS 6 will have access to Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) at both state and government levels. This service is currently offered by several wireless carriers (and other devices) through text messages, but it’s good to see Apple taking the initiative to incorporate this feature directly into its operating system. The systems upports FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) and the National Weather Service will also reportedly begin sending out WEA alerts by the end of June, Emergency Management said. That should be a big help as we approach hurricane season at the end of the summer.
