The Android platform has many fans, but Google may have been shocked to see Microsoft develop an app that runs on their platform. There are so many aspects to the news. The app, by itself has a unique name - on{x} and it’s an automation app, like Tasker is, except it’s free. It’s made for Android devices, not Windows Phone and you can login to the app, not using a Google account, but with a Facebook one. The app also acts as a scripting tool that requires no expert knowledge of programming. The app’s main purpose is to automate tasks as and when certain parameters are fulfilled. In simple terms, the app can be set to detect when you’re running and automatically start playing music. The app design is very intuitive and is available for free from the Google Play store or by using this web link.
The app has a whole bunch of unique features, such as the ability to detect your location and whether you’re walking, running or driving. It does this by using the phone’s inbuilt sensors and you can assign certain tasks you want the phone to do when that happens. Microsoft is calling these setups Recipes and there are quite a few samples ones that are present with the app and also on the site - www.onx.me. The scripting is based on Javascript and programmers can further improve the ability of the recipes as they wish.
While the app has similarities to what Tasker does, it’s pretty bizarre to see Microsoft make this kind of app for the Android market. The support for devices is a little erratic, though. We tried installing it on a Motorola Milestone, for example and it refused to install. Surprisingly, the feedback from users installing the app via the Google Play store is also unexpected. There seems to be a certain level of irritation just because on{x} doesn’t use Google Play or Microsoft Live accounts. The average rating for the product based on feedback is set to 1 star, because of 254 people voting against it.
This isn’t the only Microsoft app for Android, they released the OneNote app, which is used for capturing ideas and to-dos on the go. The application lets you create notes with text, pictures, and bullets and make and manage to-do lists with checkboxes. It lets you keep notes in sync using the Microsoft SkyDrive online storage to access, edit and manage them from your PC or almost any web browser. Microsoft plans to release a full Office suite to iOS devices as well as Android tablets, this coming November.
