HCL unveils ICS tablet 'ME Tab U1' at Rs.7,999, with educational variants

HCL has launched a new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich-based tablet in India, the HCL ME Tab U1, pricing it at Rs. 7,999. The tablet will also be launched with two educational variants, the MyEdu Tab K12 (Rs. 11,499) and MyEdu Tab HE (Rs. 9,999). The HE stands for higher-education, and K12 indicates Class 12.

HCL's brand ambassador Nargis Fakhri launching the tablet.

Interestingly, the HCL ME Tab U1, has been priced at Rs. 7,999, roughly the same price as the rumoured Micromax P-300 ICS tablet and theZync Z-990, two other Ice Cream Sandwich-based budget Android tablets.

Unfortunately, none of the three HCL tablets launched today feature access to the Android Store, or Google Play Store as it is now known – almost negating the Ice Cream Sandwich advantage. It will instead feature access to the HCL SlideMe Appstore.

All three tablets bear identical specifications, with the only difference being that the two education variants - HCL MyEdu Tab K12 and HCL MyEdu Tab HE – come with pre-installed educational content meant for students of high-school (including NCERT books) and college, respectively. They will also feature access to a HCL cloud storage service, called HCL Touch. All three tablets will be available across major stores and educational inst.

Specifications include a 7-inch (800x480) capacitive display, 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB built-in storage expandable via microSD card (maximum card size - 32GB), 0.3MP front-facing camera, no rear camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, 3G connectivity via USB dongle, mini USB, and a 3,600 mAh battery.
