LG Display begins mass production of first ever plastic e-paper display

LG Display, a leading manufacturer of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display announced that it has started mass production of the world's first plastic electronic paper display (EPD) for use in eBooks. The 6-inch XGA (1024 x 768), e-ink, plastic EPD is expected to revolutionize the eBook market with its advancements in functionality and design. This new flexible display paves the way for a whole new line of eBook readers with new and unique form factors. The world's first mass-produced plastic EPD from LG Display will first be supplied to ODM companies in China, followed by completed products to be released in Europe at the beginning of next month.

The new display offers users a paper-like reading experience with a plastic substrate that is as slim as a cell phone protection film, and a flexible design that allows bending at a range of 40 degrees from the centre of the screen. Compared to glass EPD of the same size and resolution, LG Display's plastic EPD realizes a super slim thickness of 0.7 mm, which is 1/3 slimmer than the existing glass EPD; as well as a weight of 14g, which is more than 1/2 times lighter. Traditional eBook screens are more prone to damage, if dropped from a height due to the type of display used, but when LG’s plastic EPD was put through repeated drop tests, from 1.5m above the ground or the average height of reading when standing, it was able to sustain damage a lot better. When put through a break/scratch test involving hitting the display with a small urethane hammer, no scratches or breakage resulted. As EPD gets thinner, lighter, and more durable with the introduction of plastic EPD, eBooks will be able to offer certain unique benefits, compared to smart devices and tablets, including reduced eye fatigue and more efficient electricity consumption in addition to lower prices.

The display is made using a unique technique to utilize the high TFT process, typically employed in general LCD manufacturing and with temperatures exceeding 350 degrees in the production of its plastic EPD. By overcoming the obstacles associated with applying the existing production process to heat susceptible plastic, LG Display achieved a breakthrough with the successful mass production of plastic EPD able to maintain strong durability in high temperatures.

Plastic that heals itself ???

A research team led by Professor Marek W. Urban at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg showcased a new kind of plastic material at the 243rd National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society. The claim made was that this new material “bleeds” and then heals itself just like the human skin which repairs itself naturally after it’s been wounded. This new form of plastic, when damaged will depict a reddish hue and can be healed when exposed o light. It will even work in ambient temperature or pH levels, which makes it that much more interesting.

There are tiny micro capsules, which are embedded into polymers of this material. When the plastic is damaged, the links or the chemical bonds between these micro capsules break and that results in the reddish tint .The damaged portion would then proceed to heal itself using ambient light by ‘regenerating’ or re-join the separated bonds. A chemical fluid released is what helps put these links back together.

Nissan's iPhone Case

A concept iPhone case has been made by Nissan, which uses somewhat the same concept as this new kind of plastic, which heals itself. This case self heals with the same scratch-healing paint that's used on Nissan’s Infiniti cars.

Google Maps for Android v6.5 released, with multiple updates

This week Google updated its Google Maps for Android to version 6.5, adding a redesigned Navigation menu for devices with Android 4.0+ platform. The new version provides estimated travel times within Google Maps in accordance with the traffic conditions. The traffic data is refreshed constantly so that user gets the latest possible information.

The new feature gives users ability to check current traffic conditions and also provides an estimated length of travel time, which is based on data constantly refreshed. Google says the traffic information will be better and more precise if more people opted in the service.

For devices with high pixel density screen such as Galaxy Nexus, Galaxy S II, Droid Razr and others, Google Maps will provide now higher resolution map, which means you will get less cluttered map while navigating. The new style is also said to help maps react more quickly to panning, zooming, and twisting. Google also added the ability to prioritize a transit mode and route option in Google Maps 6.5 for Android.

Nokia adds Traffic Feature on Nokia maps, starting with Delhi and Mumbai

Nokia has added the Traffic Update feature to the Location Services portfolio on Nokia Maps. At the moment, this is available for users in Delhi and Mumbai. The service is powered by NAVTEQ Traffic Pro, and will depend on data collected from users.

Before setting off, users can feed in the destination into Nokia Drive or Nokia Maps, and get an idea of the traffic situation along the way. The service refreshes every two minutes, and will re-route on the fly in case the situation changes.

The update is available as a free download for all Symbian-based Nokia smartphones, as well as the Nokia Lumia 710 and the Lumia 800

Nokia TV to strengthen ecosystem within ecosystem with live streaming

There are chances that a fresh ‘Lumia only’ application is soon going to hit the Windows Phone 7 marketplace, and it looks like it is going to be a live TV streaming application. As you can see in the images below, it has been dubbed Nokia TV, and this app aims to provide users with streaming of daily shows and videos over Wi-Fi or data connection. As reported by The Verge, the screenshots of this particular application have been leaked on site WP7forum.ru and there are chances that it will be launching soon in Finland, with their local broadcasters YLE, MTV3 and Nelopen. The application will allow users to gather and view content from various archives and upcoming networks and though complete details aren’t available, it seems like a pretty nifty feature to have in your Lumia handset. The deal however, is that if it indeed comes to Lumia phones, when will it actually come to India? That might be another story in itself.

We have already seen Nokia trying to make their presence felt in the WP7 smartphone world, with the current set (and impending release) of Lumia only applications, like Nokia Play, Drive and Maps. Also, a couple of imaging applications are also in the pipeline. This method of an ecosystem within an ecosystem definitely does give it an edge over the other Windows Phone 7 manufacturers, like HTC and Samsung. Nokia is clearly differentiating themselves from the other manufacturers and have been trying to get the crowds close to their ecosystem, and that’s definitely good planning on their part. Some might feel that this may be inclining towards more fragmentation, but it’s important to note that even for Android smartphones, every manufacturer (Sony, Samsung, HTC) has their own set of dedicated applications that are universal, only for that particular manufacturer.

Google prepping an online store to launch self-branded tablet

Rumours of a Google tablet have once again surfaced online. Reports on the Internet claim Google is planning to sell its co-branded tablets via an unidentified online store later this year.

Rumours of a Google tablet have been on the web for a long time now. First it was rumoured that Google will bring an Android tablet to compete with Amazon's Kindle Fire. Later, reports suggested the tablet will be a seven-incher and priced around $149-199, taking on the Kindle Fire.

Many reports have likened the upcoming and yet officially unheard of tablet with the Nexus tablet, which is similar to the brand’s rather successful, Nexus range of smartphones. Over the past few years, Google have come together with Samsung, with respect to their Nexus smartphones and the latter brand is being hailed as an obvious choice for manufacturing the tablet, but as per a report, it appears that Asus is in contention for manufacturing this tablet. Adding fuel to these rumours, a report by The Wall Street Journal states that the upcoming tablet from Google will be made available through an online Google-only store.

Google Drive cloud-based storage service rumoured to launch in April

Google is reportedly prepping a cloud-based storage service called 'Google Drive' or 'GDrive', which will be launched in the first week of April. Dubbed as a Dropbox rival, Google Drive service will offer 1GB of free storage and charge for additional storage space. Dropbox, however, offers 2 GB of free storage with a number of options to acquire more.

GigaOM's Om Malik, citing 'well-placed sources familiar with the company’s plans', reports Google will offer its service to Google Apps customers, and also include third-party developers into the service, allowing users to save and load files directly from Gdrive.

First rumours of Google's GDrive surfaced in 20006 and then in 2007 The Wall Street Journal published a story on GDrive, it's learnt. In 2010, Google upgraded its Google Docs services, allowing users to upload documents and files. Soon after the move, rumours started again and once again triggered by a WSJ report.

According to reports, Google's Drive service will have an interface similar to the current Gmail service and will allow users to store documents and PDFs. Rumours of Google's cloud-based storage service come shortly after HTC announced closure of its cloud service HTCSense.com. HTC on its site said that it is revamping its cloud service will come up with an improved version of it very soon.

Airtel announces new prepaid offers, but not for everyone

Dollowing TRAI’s orders, Airtel was the first telecom company to announce its detailed bills for prepaid users. Now, coming back with additional benefits for prepaid users, yet again, Airtel has announced two new offers - Recharge 11 (RC11) and Recharge 29 (RC29). These packs have been designed for texting and calling benefits, but haven't been made available to everyone, just yet.

Airtel calls it the Talk around the Clock RCV 29 offer that brings in 120 local Airtel-to-Airtel minutes for its prepaid users in Assam. So, basically, it is cost-effective at 24 paise per minute. This pack is available at just Rs.29 and it comes with validity of up to 5 days. The Message Mania SMS Pack 11 is for its customers in Assam as well as the other north eastern regions. Prepaid users can recharge their phones with Rs.11 and get 110 Local and National SMS across all the networks. The telecom provider has decided to craft this offer at just Rs.11 to offer greater value to the masses.

PlayStation 4 code-named 'Orbis', expected to launch in 2013

Reports on the Internet suggest that Sony has been hard at work on the PS4, codenamed Orbis, and the system is expected to launch in 2013.

Past rumours about Sony next gen console suggested that it would be ditching the cell-based architecture, which is there on the PS3 for a more “developer friendly” architecture. According to reports, the processor is an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU will power the graphics. The device is also expected to support a resolution of 4096x2160. That 4K! Take thatApple Retina Display!

The fact that Sony’s new hardware could support 4K may not be a hoax considering the PlayStation history. Every PlayStation console has brought with it a new disc format and supported a higher screen resolution. The PS1 was the best CD player, the PS2 was the best DVD player and the PS3 brought with it the Blu-Ray format.

The biggest disappointment with the PS3 was that its backward compatibility to PS2 games wasn’t great and this feature was eventually dropped in the subsequent iterations of the console. Reports suggest that the PS4, the Orbis, will not be backwards compatible at all!

Recent speculations on the Internet suggested that the next gen XBOX would not be compatible with used games. This may just become an industry norm as reports suggest that the Orbis too will not be compatible with used games.

Mozilla unveils HTML5 MMO game demo - BrowserQuest

n an effort to promote the HTML5 platform, Mozilla has launched a retro-style MMO adventure game demo based on the technology, called BrowserQuest. To that end, it has also released source code for developers, showcasing how the technology can be used today to create a real-time multiplayer game in a single webpage.

Releasing a statement about the game, Mozilla said in a blog post: "BrowserQuest is a tribute to classic video-games with a multiplayer twist. You play as a young warrior driven by the thrill of adventure. No princess to save here, just a dangerous world filled with treasures to discover. And it’s all done in glorious HTML5 andJavaScript."

Mozilla’s BrowserQuest game was developed by Little Workshop, and uses a new bi-directional server-browser communication technology called WebSockets. The game can be played in Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and with WebSockets, even with Opera. It will also run on Safari for iOS, and Firefox for Android.

BrowserQuest utilizes HTML5’s built-in tools to easily generate a 2D tile-based world, its audio APIs for sound, and the WebSockets layer to communicate with the backend server. Users will be able to access their game across platforms, with localStorage-based autosave features keeping track of everything. Chat features, and a user dashboard, are also be available.
You can check out the game here, read more about it here, and find the source code here.
Detailing how it all works, the blog post continues: "When you start to play, your browser opens up a WebSocket connection to one of several load-balanced game servers. Each server hosts multiple world instances and handles the player synchronization and game logic within all instances. Because the server code is running on Node.js, both the server and client codebases share a small portion of the same JavaScript source code…The mobile versions are more experimental than the desktop experience, which has richer features and performance, but it’s an early glimpse of what kind of games will be coming to the mobile Web in the future."

Rovio Mobile buys Futuremark Game Studios

Angry Birds maker Rovio Mobile has bought Futuremark Games, the gaming studio that belonged to Finnish benchmarking software firm, Futuremark. The amount of money exchanged in the transaction is undisclosed. Futuremark Games has previously released space themed games, like Unstoppable Gorg and Shattered Horizon. This move from Rovio comes nearly a week after the release of Angry Birds Space and nearly two months after teasing the game. Rovio could be buying the company to absorb its talent for future updates and levels to Angry Birds Space.

Angry Birds Space has already reached 10 million downloads in a span of three days. The game also topped the game charts in the Apple Store in 104 countries. Angry Birds games have been downloaded more than 700 million times and is the most downloaded mobile game. They are also the fastest growing game on Facebook. The company hasn't made a statement on when the next levels of Angry Birds Space will be out and if there will be any more changes to the game. Rovio worked with NASA to bring the reality of playing a game in space, with zero gravity and trajectories to Angry Birds Space. With Rovio's new acquisition, there might be more we can look forward to from the animals in outer space.

Rovio had recently been in the spotlight when chief marketing officer, Peter Vesterbacka stated that the company had no plans to release Angry Birds Space to Windows Phone. This made companies like Nokia and Microsoft virtually shake in their shoes. If Rovio was serious about not bringing Angry Birds Space to Windows Phone, their attempts to gain stronger footing in the smartphone market would wane, especially amongst handheld gaming teenagers. Vesterbacka said it would require a lot of work to develop for Windows Phone. However, later, Rovio CEO Mikael Hed stated that Angry Birds Space would indeed come to Windows Phone and that the company wanted the game to be present on all relevant platforms. Along with Angry Birds Space, Rovio is supposed to release Space themed animation and retail in their attempt to become a full fledged entertainment company.

Facebook new app Enemy graphs lets you create enemy list

A new Facebook application called EnemyGraph lets you add enemies to your profile including people from your friends list or from users of the app. Also, you can declare 'war' on any product, person or company that is on Facebook. The application is available for free to all Facebook users.

EnemyGraph app, spotted by Boy Genius Report this week, was launched earlier this month by a team led by technologist Dean Terry, who describes the app as "a kind of social media blasphemy."

Terry also points out that that they are using the term ‘enemy’ in the same loose way as Facebook uses ‘friends’. The 'enemy' term simply implies something you have an issue with.

EnemyGraph also features a list of top enemies (users of the app) along with "trending enemies" that users have named frequently in recent times. Fox News, Justin Bieber, and Internet Explorer were tending as the Top 5 enemies on the EnemyGraph list.

Google adds "Play" to its navigation bar

You may have noticed an addition to the black navigation bar that runs along the top of most Google products in your browser — a link to the Google Play Store, helpfully labeled "New" in red block capitals. Google Play now has pride of place in between Maps and YouTube, signaling its importance to the company over services relegated to a drop-down menu like Translate and Reader. Will increased visibility for Google's newly unified store solve the issues it has with getting people to pay for premium content? Only time will tell, but what we'd really like is the ability to choose which services go into the bar in the first place.

The new store, essentially a rebranded Android Market combined with Google Music and Google eBookstore, was unveiled earlier this month. Perhaps a tacit admission that Google's approach to digital content was fragmented, executives said at Google Play's debut that the new store is designed to break down the walls separating the company's disparate offerings.

Assassin's Creed III special edition revealed

Ubisoft today announced three separate collector’s editions for Assassin’s Creed III - The Special Edition, The Freedom Edition and The Join or Die Edition. The Special Edition features the game in a fancier packing (presumably steel case) as well an extra single player mission. The Join or Die Edition will feature the game, a sweet Assassin medallion, George Washington's notebook, 1 in-game Single Player Mission as well as a multiplayer only Sharpshooter package.

The Freedom edition, which also happens to be the top of line will include the game, a 24-cm high-quality figurine of Connor, a steelbook case art drawn by renowned artist Alex Ross, George Washington's notebook, an exclusive Lithograph, 2 in-game Single Player Missions and the multiplayer only Sharpshooter package.

Ubisoft has not announced prices for either of these editions, but we’re guessing that all three will be available in India at launch. Assassin’s Creed III releases by the 30th of October, 2012 for the Xbox360, PS3, PC and Wii U.
