The mobile space has been sizzling with activity and things are about get even hotter. A phone powered by Mozilla’s ‘Boot to Gecko’ OS is expected to launch by the end of the year and more devices are expected to arrive by early 2013. Mozilla has tied up with Telefonica for the launch of these devices in Brazil, and it would be the first country to receive devices running this OS. The appllications running on the device are expected to be based on HTML5, which is quickly gaining momentum across the web. Mozilla’s CEO Gary Kovacs said that the point of the product was to make the internet accessible to the users in their pockets.
The Boot to Gecko OS from Mozilla is basically a lightweight OS with a browser running on top of it. All of the applications would be web apps based on modern web standards. Prices however are expected to be aggressive and match those of the Android devices. Mozilla is popularly known for the Firefox web browser, that’s been one of the most used browsers around the world.
The platform wars are heating up - Google recently launched their Ice Cream Sandwich update and new devices are being launched on it. iOS 5 was recently launched too and Microsoft’s Phone 7 has some traction. Windows 8 is expected on tablets, which could possibly evolve into a mobile phone platform as well. Mozilla is then entering a very crowded space and they’ll have to pull out something really impressive out of the hat. The issues with using an OS that relies on web apps is that you need to be always connected. Internet connectivity around the world has improved but for quick access, fast connections such as 3G need to be available widely and at affordable rates.
