Facebook adds organ donor feature

Facebook has added the new organ donor feature on Timeline, which allows 900 million members to share their donor status with others. The feature has been been rolled out in only the U.S., so far. One can go to the Life Events section on their timeline, click on Health and wellness and then click on organ donor. They can then fill in all the required and relevant information. It also has a link to the databases where people can register as official donors, while users can choose to share this information only with those they like. Millions of people stay connected on Facebook, while most of them visit their Facebook page at least once a day. This move seems a good way of helping those in need and also exhibits the strength of the social networking site and its capability to be a part of such a noble cause.

Mark Zuckerberg revealed in a an interview on Good Morning America that the organ donation initiative has been inspired by disasters, like last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan and also the social network's role in keeping people connected. Zuckerberg also mentions his girlfriend, Priscilla Chan, studying to become a pediatrician. "Our dinner conversations are often about Facebook and kids, and the kids that she's meeting. She'll see them getting sicker, then, all of a sudden, an organ becomes available, and she comes home and her face is all lit up because someone's life is going to be better because of this."

The social site will be partnering with Donate Life America, a national organization that works with local groups to increase the number of registered donors. About 114,000 men, women and children are presently waiting for a lifesaving transplant, said Aisha Huertas Michel from the organization and thousands more are in need of tissue or corneal transplants. This would further encourage people to donate and register officially and also serve as a platform to initiate conversations about organ donation.
