Nexus 7, Galaxy Nexus start getting Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean update

Google has started rolling out Android 4.2.1 to Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus.

If one is using a Galaxy Nexus smartphone, the update is available for those using the Takju and Yakju versions of the handset. The update is available as an over-the-air update and the software is still in the process of being rolled out. If one does not see the option to update their device, then you need not worry as it should roll out soon enough. However, XDA has provided download links if one wants to manually update their handsets. Those with a custom recovery mode can download the zip file, copy it on to your device and flash it through the same.

Here are the links to download Android 4.2.1:
Galaxy Nexus Takju JOP40D
Galaxy Nexus Yakju JOP40D

A few days ago, a strange issue for devices running on the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean platform was reported. The entire month of December was missing in the People app.

Based on the posts issued by users of the latest Nexus devices, the update is just 1.1MB and the build is dubbed JOP40D. The major feature of this version is that it addresses the December event glitch that had been prevalent in the earlier build of Android 4.2. With this update, all other features remain the same as the previous version.

A few days back it was reported that Google had promised that a fix would be available soon. In an official post, Google had acknowledged that it discovered a bug in the app update that left out the month of December in the People app. The niggling bug facing users of Android 4.2 Jelly Bean clearly meant that those with birthdays, anniversaries or other important events scheduled for the month would be left in an odd spot.

Google wrote in its post, "We discovered a bug in the Android 4.2 update, which makes it impossible to enter December events in optional fields of the People app (this bug did not affect Calendar). Rest assured, this will be fixed soon so that those of you with December birthdays and anniversaries won't be forgotten by your friends and family."

Sony India introduces Vaio Duo 11 at Rs. 89,990

Sony India today showed off its efforts with the next generation hybrid Ultrabook, the Vaio Duo 11. This device can switch between being a tablet and being a full-fledged ultrabook.

The Sony Vaio Duo 11 has an 11.6-inch Full HD touch panel. The Surf Slider design allows you to switch between tablet and ultrabook mode by just sliding the display forwards and up or back and down. The hybrid device features the Opti-Contrast panel which is slightly different from a conventional touchscreen panel – the touch panel and the LCD are joined together with glue, as compared to the conventional panel that has an air gap between the LCD and the touch panel layer.

The Vaio Duo 11 comes with a variety of connectivity options as well – two USB 3.0 ports, one USB 2.0 port, Ethernet, memory card slot and a full HDMI port. One of the USB 3.0 ports also doubles up as the Sleep Charge port, which lets you charge any connected phone even while the Duo 11 may be in sleep mode or completely shut down.

Sony’s mobile and tablet technologies called the xLoud and Clear Phase are also implemented on the Vaio Duo 11. Dolby Theater v4 makes an appearance as well. Sony will bundle the device with noise cancelling earphones. Incidentally, unlike other noise cancelling earphones, they do not have any integrated battery, but use the battery from the Duo 11 itself. Meaning, if we use these earphones with any other device, they will work as basic earphones without the noise-cancelling feature.

Just to run you through the specs on the Vaio Duo 11, an Intel Core i5-3317U processor will power it. This is the same one clocked at 1.7GHz that we have seen on multiple ultrabooks. This will be paired with 4GB of system RAM, and storage will be on a 128GB SSD. No word yet on whether the SSD will be available in various capacity options. A 64-bit version of Windows 8 will come preloaded on the device, but is the base edition, that should not be confused with Windows 8 Pro or Windows 8 RT.

Sony has said that this device will be available in India starting end of December 2012, and will be priced at Rs. 89,990.

Ubisoft to release huge patch for Assassin's Creed III

Ubisoft has now detailed a large upcoming patch that is aimed at fixing around a hundred other bugs of Assassin's Creed III. According to a post on the official forums, Ubisoft will be releasing the patch by the end of next week. The company has also said that the PC version of the game will ship with all the patches apply, giving PC gamers a considerably less buggy experience than console gamers at launch.

On the single player side of things, there are many bugs in story missions where mission objectives couldn't be completed because of various bugs. There are many fixes to bugs on the multiplayer side of things as well, including one where a lose streak wouldn't get triggered even after the appropriate amount of deaths. While all the bug fixes apply to both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 versions of the game, the consoles are getting platform specific bug fixes as well, with major bugs in the Westpoint DLC for the PS3 being fixed. The Xbox 360 version saw the removal of the map icon for the Benedict Arnold DLC, as the DLC is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 version of the game. You can catch the complete patch notes on the Ubisoft forums. There are many story spoilers mentioned in the patch notes, so spoiler warnings apply.

TomTom opens up maps to developers

Mapping software company TomTom has made its vast mapping data available to apps developers, providing an alternative to companies that now use maps from Google Inc and Apple Inc.

Dutch-based TomTom, best-known for its car navigation systems, launched its location-based services platform on Thursday as it looks to compete in a crowded marketplace for Web and mobile maps.

The platform is available for free on a trial basis but developers have to pay if they use the data for commercial purposes.

The new service provides developers access to location and navigation data - including traffic management and routing - and can also be used for collecting location-based intelligence, said Peter Davie, director of product management licensing at TomTom.

Mapping has emerged as a critical application in the mobile computing economy, and TomTom has lagged in taking advantage of the smartphone revolution.

TomTom, the largest navigation device maker in Europe and one of the top three digital map makers globally, has been hurt as consumers increasingly opt for free or cheap navigation software available on smartphones and tablet computers.

The new cloud-based service is a first step in taking advantage of the huge opportunities in the sector, and TomTom says it has had a lot of inquiries from companies interested in using TomTom maps for location data.

Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update starts rolling out

Google has now started rolling out Android 4.2 Jelly Bean to a range of its older devices, including the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7.

If you own a Galaxy Nexus, you should receive a notification for the update on your handset. In case you haven't, head over to Settings>About Phone> System Updates to get the latest version of Android.

However, all Galaxy Nexus devices are being updated to Android 4.2 yet. There are three versions of the Galaxy Nexus smartphone: the Galaxy Nexus Takju, which is sold through the Google Play Store; an international version called the Galaxy Nexus Yakju; and the Galaxy Nexus Yakjuxx, which is sold by Samsung.

As of now, only the Galaxy Nexus Takju is receiving the Android 4.2 update. The international version, the Galaxy Nexus Yakju was the first to receive Android 4.1.2, and it should be only a matter of time before this handset receives Android 4.2.

Google has recently announced Android 4.2, and this version still retains the Jelly Bean branding like Android 4.1. The camera app of Android 4.2 now features the Photo Sphere, which enables users to take high resolution, 360-degree photographs on all axes, giving the pictures a look much like Google Street View. You will instantly be able to share the photograph on whatever medium you desire, including Google Maps, if you want to make the picture public.

The new keyboard, making its debut in Android 4.2, supports gesture-typing. This allows you to type out words without having to tap on the screen, and instead, sliding your finger across the keyboard over letters that are part of the word. This is a lot like the Swype keyboard by Nuance that is commonly found pre-installed on Samsung devices.

Another big feature in the new version is the ability to have multiple profiles for tablets. This allows users to share their tablets without the fear of having their privacy compromised due to another person using the same device. Users can have a separate profile with different accounts, settings, and apps, for different members of the family, for instance. Schools could use the same tablets for different children from different classes.

One more major feature of the latest version of Android is the update to Google Now, a service that Google introduced with the Jelly Bean version (4.1). Google has added more features to Google Now. The service can now alert you of flight and hotel recommendations, as well as about nearby attractions, photo spots, movie times, and concert timings. All this comes thanks to the new Knowledge Graph by Google, which, according to Google, gives you more information on things you didn't even know you were looking for. While looking for websites, the new Knowledge Graph could lead you to more in-depth information on subjects that are closely related to your search.

The update will also add the Miracast functionality to the Android platform. It will allow users to display the content playing on their screens to a TV, DVD Player, or any other device that supports Miracast. A trade name for Wi-Fi Direct, Miracast is an 802.11n compatible network for display-sharing.

So this Diwali, the techie here at Tech Biscuits have made his very own wishlist in the hopes that the gods will shine down on  him with gifts this season. I’m not much of a miser to actually save up a huge sum of money to buy these, so if you happen to be my sister, father, distant relative, or even long-lost twin, don’t hesitate to order one for me.

 Canon EOS 550D

I enjoy photography. This year, I would like to buy the Canon EOS 550D DSLR camera. I have a basic point and shoot digicam Canon A3100 IS. That camera made me realize my true passion. Because of that camera, I started my photo blog World Behind Lenses. Now this Canon 550D will help me to take splendid photographs. It comes with the world best CMOS censor that supports 18.2 MegaPixels. The camera shoots slow-mo videos with Full HD (1080p). Price at 30,000 rupees, its ah..... well above my budget :P. Guys seriously, please don't hesitate to order one for me. Here's the link.

LG 55LM8600 3D HDTV

I’d also like to have the LG 55LM8600. Sure, I might not actually have the space for it at home, but if need be, I’ll break stuff down to put it in. The tiny bezel and sharp features make it a seriously cool product, but more importantly—and this is aside from it being a Smart HDTV—the colours are quite vibrant and Dual Play will make it an excellent option for gaming. Built in Wi-Fi and DLNA support will make it easy for in-home connectivity as well. For a vidiot like me, this TV would be the ‘bomb’... pun intended

Gibson Les Paul Standard

I played guitar since 2006. I want for this Diwali a Gibson Les Paul Standard. Yeah, it might be a tad too expensive at more than Rs. 2 lakh, but trust me, it’s the best guitar on the planet. Holding one is like holding your first-born child. It’s beautiful, soothing and inspires you to play.  It’s been THE choice of the greatest guitarists ever, right from Clapton, Zakk Wilde and Jimmy Page to Slash. What more can I say? I’m not much of a miser to actually save up this kind of money to buy one, so if you happen to be my sister, father, distant relative, or even long-lost twin, don’t hesitate to order one for me. Here’s the link.

Apple iPhone 5

Apple this month launched world's best smartphone iPhone 5 for just a small sum of 50,000 bucks. Can't have much to say about this ,as you all know that it is the best.

Macbook Pro with Retina Display

This year Apple also launched a new model in their flagship Macbook series. This Retina Display Macbook Pro is available in two variants- 13 inch and 15 inch. It is slim, light weight and packed with all high performing stuffs. There is only one word to describe it- AWESOME.
Again guys, I am telling you " I’m not much of a miser to actually save up a huge sum of money to buy a Macbook Pro, so if you happen to be my sister, father, distant relative, or even long-lost twin, don’t hesitate to order one for me."

Batman Arkham City Collector's Edition

I don't why I love batman so much. Batman has been my role model since my childhood. He is my favorite super hero. The way he beats his enemy, not by any super power but by tactics and skills, impresses. I wish my city had one. Once again, I’m not much of a miser to actually save up a huge sum of money to buy a Macbook Pro, so if you happen to be my sister, father, distant relative, or even long-lost twin, don’t hesitate to order one for me." Here's the link.

LG launches the EA93, the world's first 21:9 ultrawide monitor

LG has announced the launch of its EA93 UltraWide Monitor, the world’s first monitor to boast a 21:9 aspect ratio. The 29-inch screen gives plenty of visibility and space with 2560x1080 resolution, a 4-way Split-Screen feature and 100% sRGB colour space expression to provide better multitasking and multimedia capabilities.

The monitor looks to be designed to maximize productivity, with an IPS display that attempts to deliver lifelike colours, and a massive screen-size that allows for multiple documents and windows to be opened simultaneously, as well as higher viewing space within documents, such as more columns in a spreadsheet, multiple pages side-by-side in a document, etc.

The unique 4-way Split-Screen feature is designed to be able to split the screen into two to four segments as per requirements, each with its own individual customizability, making multitasking and running parallel programs easier.

The monitor also supports connectivity to two external devices via Dual Link-up, giving consistent colour and shading schemes across all monitors/screens, and preventing the occurrence of inconsistencies that are usually seen in traditional dual-monitor setups.

Lastly, the monitor’s 21:9 aspect ratio is a very close scale resemblance to the aspect ratio of most high definition movie theatres. This allows the monitor to play movies with ease, even at high definition, without distorting the picture and/or sacrificing on quality of the image. The usage of IPS technology is also seen as an attempt to circumvent problems of viewing the screens from varying angles, which can lead to the viewer losing the image on the monitor.

Additional features include 400 nits brightness rating, a response time of 5ms GTG, an MHL connection to allow direct smartphone connectivity to the monitor, Picture-In-Picture (PIP) and Picture-By-Picture (PBP) support, Auto Ratio Control, etc., amongst many others.

There has been no official word on pricing yet from the company. The monitor is first being introduced in Korea this month, and will be rolled out across the world in the coming weeks.

The standard six-cell battery configuration will deliver approximately 11 hours of operation (Mobile MarkTM 2007, 60Cd/m2), the three-cell smart battery delivers approximately five hours of operation, and the nine-cell high capacity battery provides approximately 15 hours of use.
