Apple now owns iPhone5.com domain

When Apple announces a product, they usually obtain the domain name that resembles the product name. In the past, Apple has been proactive in securing domains, such as iPhone.com and a host of others. The brand however, had a difficult time securing the iPhone4S.com domain, as it had been associated with a pornographic website. As is the case with most claims, Apple won it, allowing them to secure that domain name, too. This year Apple is set to debut their next-generation flagship handset that is expected to be called the iPhone 5. However, this domain had already been used by a fan forum site. Earlier on this month, Apple sought to gain access of this domain by filing a case with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as it could be the probable name of their next handset. The brand aimed to gain access to it, so that if a fan typed the name in a browser, they would not be directed to a porn site or a malicious website. As per a report by The Next Web, Apple has secured the web domain - iPhone5.com.

As per the report, “Apple has successfully won its dispute over the iPhone5.com domain, after it took its complaint to the World Intellectual Property Organization. WIPO recently posted to its website that the domain has been ‘Terminated’, with the domain owner expected to have relinquished ownership. The iPhone5.com domain is now being held by brand protection agency Corporation Service Company, which may have been used by Apple to take ownership.” Even though Apple may have access to the domain name they may never use it and it is most likely a move by the Cupertino brand to stop people from cashing in on their trademarked product. Based on a countless list of rumours, the next iPhone is expected to be launched sometime around September or October, this year. However, Apple is hosting its annual WWDC event next month and maybe the brand have a surprise up their sleeve and unveil the handset at the event itself instead of the September/ October time frame.
